Things to do

If you don’t subscribe to Dave Navarro’s Monday Morning Kick in the Ass, you really should. Go ahead. I’ll be here when you get back.

This week’s ass-kicking had the following instructions:

1) Write down 4 things you’ve been “meaning to do.”
that are not “goals.”  I’m talking “take the kids to
the park” or “shop ahead of time so I’m not doing
drive-thru for lunch this week.”

2) Do one of these things each week for the next
four weeks.

3) Feel so damned much better about your life.

4) Reply to this email each week this month when
you actually do this.  I’ll give you an email high-five.

I’ve been thinking about this all week. What are four things I’ve been “meaning to do” that are not “goals”? I’ve been all about goals lately: lose weight, learn to program, regain my musical proficiency. I’ve also been feeling the burnout slowly creeping up on me, and I think part of it is that I keep thinking, “Man, it’d be nice to (do something)”, and putting it off until after I achieve something.

Today it started coming together. Here is my list:

1) Write a module for that Dungeons and Dragons campaign I want to create. One piece at a time will be easier to manage than the whole thing at once, right?

2) Make time to start learning mad skillz from Troy by creating something (as opposed to reading books for two years before doing anything).

3) Waste an entire day playing Fallout 3. Seriously. I want a day where no one expects anything from me.

4) Record a new piece of music. I was so excited about this in October!

I have no idea what order I’m going to be doing these in, but this week is half over, so I’d better get moving.

Hey! Just so you know, you’ve been doing *awesome* with some of your goals. Maybe you haven’t had so much time for music lately, but you’ve been totally rocking the programming and weight loss. I agree that you need a day just to have fun though. :)

Yeah, I’d like a day for just videogames too. Having a girlfriend really takes time away from doing that. On the other hand, I have been playing music and working on my puzzle more lately, so…

We will totally work on developing your soon to be mad leather working skills :)

Good job on the weight loss and the programming!

Just so you know, Tim also plays D&D and would be interested in hearing about what you have to say! :D

Wow, sorry about being slow to respond!

Sarah – All this rocking is making me tired.

Dave – If you phrase it right, you can get some amazing buy-in from the lady in regards to a video game day. Also, trading a game day for something extra fun can work, too. She might even bake you brownies to show her support.

Troy – Looking forward to it!

Kate – Well, it turns out I like talking about D&D as much as I like playing it, so hack into his Google account and add me to Reader.
