Grinwolf's Gift

February 20th, 2009

Today’s story is a little bit of folklore, as related to a kid by his father. I mentioned a while back that one of my goals with posting these every week was to develop a more robust backstory for my novel without contracting Worldbuilder’s Syndrome. As far as that goes, this story was a success for me. Here’s what I came up with:

  • 1 mythological tale
  • 1 yearly festival
  • the word “Partymancer”

Enjoy!

Frozen Mobile Tomb

February 18th, 2009

Monday night was pretty amazing, and I’m not even referring to the epic battle with the goblins at Hetcroft.1 No, the crazy part was where I nearly froze to death in Sarah’s car.

Things wrapped up around 10:15, which is a bit later than I prefer to get out since it’s 40 minutes home and I get up at 5. We got out to the wife’s car and discovered that both doors were frozen shut. Crap! Lock de-icer didn’t help, so I put on my brave face and went in through the trunk,  then pulled the car into Jeremy’s garage and just kind of sat there while he set up some space heaters to thaw things out. It was kind of chilly in there, and I think it would have been a good idea to zip my coat before getting in.

Good times.

I did eventually get to sleep.

  1. It was frickin amazing, though []

Valentiney

February 16th, 2009

Valentine’s Day is relevant to this blog because of how awesome ours was: We went to Barnes & Noble Friday night. No fancy dinners, no overpriced jewelry, no rose petals strewn about for the dog to eat1. Just the two of us2 wandering the aisles and looking at the hundreds of dead trees we would love to take home with us.

We began with the mediocre Starbucks that our local B&N has.3 It was bland, so I added too much nutmeg and made it awful. Apparently the wife’s drink was acceptable.

At first we stuck together, but eventually split up to stare at and ponder our respective Typical Sections: the wife in History, me in Sci-Fi/Fantasy. After a while we met up, showed each other the books that interested us, and asked, “Is there anything else you want?”, each secretly hoping for a “Yes” so it would justify an additional purchase.

Sarah got three books:
– Doomed Queens
4
– She’s Come Undone
5
Interview With the Vampire6

And I got two:
– Witch
7
Dream Hunter8

(The reason for the imbalance was because I still had to go home and start reading Eclipse, but don’t tell anyone I said that.)

Did you guys do anything rad this weekend?

  1. I did buy daisies for the wife, but that was Thursday []
  2. plus everyone at the bookstore []
  3. I’m not one of those anti-corporate hippies. This particular Starbucks really is pretty bad. []
  4. All about dead queens! []
  5. I actually don’t remember what this one was about []
  6. We kept forgetting to steal my sister’s copy []
  7. the sequel to another book I mentioned a while back, which wound up being very good []
  8. Sarah read the back and thought it sounded cool, and I trust her judgment []
