Drago led the way through the darkened city, weaving a path between the buildings and darting across the streets. Garnet stayed close behind him while Shin kept pace with Vera.
“Why do we act like criminals?” he asked.
“The Afflicted are sequestered,” said Vera. “It’s not a good idea to be seen heading into — or out of — their area.”

Hey, sorry about missing yesterday. I just wanted to let everyone know I’m switching to an evening update schedule, for two reasons:
1) Even with the occasional distractions, home is a much better environment for writing than work, so the stuff I write at home tends to be better.
2) Sometimes my blog triggers a flood of ideas. At home, I can actually chase those ideas down and do things with them.
Yesterday was kind of a fluke because I was… well, not in the best frame of mind. I got as far as “The Afflicted, part 9″, though, so that’s one less thing to do tonight.

They had three responsibilities on their day off: prepare meals for everyone in the house, keep the house clean and in good repair, and wash their robes. Beyond that, they were free to spend their time as they wished.
As Shin gasped and staggered to a stop at the boarding house door, a sweaty Ethan popped up off the steps and clapped him on the back. “Nice! I think that was better than Phony did on his first try. Let’s get you some water.” Through sheer enthusiasm, the athletic Ethan had convinced Shin to spend what little money he’d earned on a ragged pair of shorts and baggy shirt and go for a run through their neighborhood.
